Our 30 core fundamentals at Capital Directions form the foundation for our unique culture. We call it “The CD Way” — and around here, it’s a pretty big deal. We’re not just checking boxes or making a laundry list of feel-good buzzwords. Simply put, The CD Way guides everything we do.

The 30 fundamentals are our road map. We talk about them every day. We think about them as we work. When a challenge comes along, we look to them for guidance. Simple, direct, honest — each of the fundamentals keeps us headed in the right direction.

“At first glance, it might seem like a lot, and you’re probably thinking ‘Couldn’t we narrow it down to 10?’,” says Dennis Covington, CFP®, CEO of Capital Directions. “But the truth is we love how comprehensive it is. No matter the situation, there’s one or more fundamentals that apply, and it helps us do our jobs with our priorities in order.”

The CD Way isn’t your typical list of guiding principles taped to the break room wall. Everyone knows the fundamentals inside and out. In fact, each week a team member writes about that week’s fundamental in focus and emails it to everyone each Monday morning to start the week. We also discuss the fundamental of the week at the beginning of each team meeting.

“Each fundamental is important, but there’s a reason #1 is at the top of the list,” says Covington. “Do the right thing, always. It sums up our entire mission, our commitment to our clients, and our obligation to each other as colleagues. It could be a major financial decision or an everyday office interaction, but doing the right thing by others is our most important calling.”
